I took this photo from the corner windowseat in our Venetian apartment on the Grand Canal. I spent a lot of time perched on the cushion there, not really reading my book because the view was too fascinating. I loved watching the myriad of boat traffic on the Grand Canal and how it varied throughout the day and from day-to-day. This photo shows a gondola turning down the small canal called Rio d. San Giovanni Grisostomo that ran alongside the length of our apartment (by our bedroom windows!). This tiny canal — only the second canal down from Rialto — was very popular with gondoliers who often enjoyed calling out “Ciao bella” to us while the tourists in their boat took pictures of us! It was all quite hilariously entertaining. Across the Grand Canal, you can see the Rialto Market famous for fresh fruits, vegetables and fish where it was a joy to shop for fresh groceries!
